In life, there are only three things we have full control over: our thoughts, attitudes, and actions. Outside of those three, everything else is beyond our direct control.
Many people try to manage or control their spouses, children, or others around them, but they ultimately lack the power to dictate how others think or act. What we can control is how we respond, starting with our thoughts, which shape our attitudes, and our attitudes, which direct our actions.
So, how can we learn to control our thoughts?
1. Stay in the Word
Ground yourself in Scripture daily. Immersing yourself in God’s Word nurtures a spiritual attitude, which is essential for living a life of purpose. When you feel close to God, your potential expands, and obstacles feel manageable.
2. Read Daily
Besides reading Scripture, find time each day to read a book that challenges and inspires you. This habit can refine your thoughts, influence your attitude, and ultimately guide your actions toward growth.
3. Surround Yourself with Positive People
A positive mindset is contagious. When you’re around people who uplift you, it’s easier to keep a hopeful outlook, see opportunities in difficulties, and continue dreaming big. Seek friends who bring light to your life and make it easier to focus on the good.
4. Limit Exposure to Negative People
Avoiding negativity is just as important as seeking positivity. Negative people can drain you and gradually affect your attitude. This subtle influence can lead to a negative outlook before you even realize it. Avoid the slow “boiling frog” effect by guarding your environment carefully.
5. Share Your Experiences
Nothing enriches your life like sharing your experiences—both good and bad. Your stories have the power to encourage others, offering hope and resilience. By helping others see that they, too, can overcome challenges, you create a cycle of positivity that enriches everyone involved.
6. Teach What You Know
Teaching is more than storytelling; it’s imparting wisdom and helping others learn from your journey. Each of us has overcome obstacles and gained valuable knowledge. Pass it on—there’s someone who can benefit from your experience.
7. Give Back to Causes You Believe In
A fulfilling life involves serving others. Dedicating time to causes that matter to you gives purpose and satisfaction. It might look different for everyone, but when we contribute to something greater than ourselves, our attitudes are lifted, and we find joy in knowing we’re making a difference.
Facing Life’s Challenges with the Right Attitude
Can these practices change your circumstances? Maybe, but that’s not the main goal. Life will always bring challenges we cannot control, but we can always control how we respond to them.
When facing any situation, we have three options:
- Complain about it – Complaining only strengthens negativity. It amplifies a bad attitude and leads to unproductive actions.
- Change the circumstances – When possible, take decisive action to improve your situation. Sometimes, a shift in environment or relationships is necessary for growth.
- Change your attitude – When circumstances can’t change, the only way forward is to adjust your outlook. Choosing gratitude and faith allows you to grow, even through challenges.
Our lives reflect our thoughts, attitudes, and actions. So, by setting our minds on God and positive influences, we can create a life marked by purpose, resilience, and blessings. Pray for God’s guidance, ask Him for courage to maintain a positive attitude, and seek His peace as you journey toward becoming the person He’s called you to be.
