Taking the First Step: Why It Matters and How to Do It with Faith

No matter what you do in life, the first step is inevitable. Whether you’re learning to walk, ride a bike, or start a new job, everything begins with that initial movement. The truth is, you have to crawl before you can walk. Imagine stepping into a new role at work and expecting to master it on day one. It doesn’t work that way.

Growth is a process. Taking the first step may feel uncomfortable or even awkward, but it’s necessary. Remember, even the most skilled professionals had a day one.

Zechariah 4:10 reminds us, “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.” Every great achievement starts with a small, humble step. Faith is the anchor that helps us move forward despite uncertainty.

Lessons from Peter Walking on Water

A powerful example of taking the first step can be found in Matthew 14:28-31. When Peter saw Jesus walking on water, he asked to join Him. At Jesus’ invitation, Peter stepped out of the boat and began walking on the waves. However, when Peter took his eyes off Jesus and focused on the wind and waves, he began to sink. Even so, Jesus immediately reached out and caught him. This story highlights the importance of faith in taking the first step. Peter’s willingness to step onto the water, despite the risk, demonstrates that progress often begins with courage and trust in God’s power. Even if we falter, Jesus is there to lift us up and help us continue the journey.

James 1:2-4 encourages us, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” Each misstep is a step closer to God’s plan, refining and preparing us for greater things.

Mastery takes patience. It often takes months to settle into a new job, just as it takes time to learn new skills or grow spiritually. If managers judged us on our first day, most of us wouldn’t have made it far.

Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” This shows us that even though we plan, it’s God who directs each step. But He can only direct if we are willing to step forward in faith.

First Steps Are Everywhere

Reflecting on my son’s first steps years ago brings this point home. I remember the moment Lil Chris put weight on his feet for the first time. Holding him, I watched as he tentatively took that first step. It was incredible. Babies are all about firsts—first cries, first meals, first words. Their lives are marked by constant new beginnings.

Can you remember your first date or your first kiss? Those butterflies in your stomach were part of the experience. It’s okay to feel nervous when trying something new. As the saying goes, let your butterflies fly in formation. Nerves are normal, but they shouldn’t stop you from moving forward.

Joshua 1:9 says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Courage and faith in the face of new beginnings are essential.

Fear Stops Progress

Too often, fear paralyzes us. Fear of the unknown. Fear of failure. But life is about taking risks and stepping into new territories. Each day is an opportunity for a fresh start. When nothing is new, life stagnates.

Isaiah 43:19 declares, “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” God calls us to embrace the new things He brings into our lives. Don’t let fear rob you of the life God has for you.

Consider Moses. When God called him to lead Israel out of Egypt, Moses hesitated, doubting his abilities (Exodus 4:10). Yet, he took that first step in obedience, and God equipped him along the way.

Faith Requires the First Step

Until you take that first step, you can’t begin the journey God has for you. Even God requires a step of faith. The first step toward salvation is accepting Jesus as Lord. From there, God guides your purpose.

Think of Abraham. God told him to leave his country and go to a land He would show him. Abraham had no map, just faith. His journey began with one step (Genesis 12:1).

Faith requires action. As James 2:17 states, “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” Action activates faith.

Action Is Key

Years ago, The Secret became popular, promoting the idea that thoughts alone could shape reality. While mindset is crucial, the missing piece is action. Nothing happens without it. Thinking alone doesn’t create change—action does.

Taking the wrong step can be corrected. But taking no step leads to nothing. You end up living someone else’s dream instead of pursuing your God-given purpose.

Ecclesiastes 11:4 warns, “Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap.” Waiting for perfect conditions often leads to inaction.

Stay Young Through First Steps

Life is an adventure. The key to staying young at heart is embracing new experiences. When we stop trying new things, life becomes mundane. God calls us to live, not merely survive.

John 10:10 says, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” A full life is rich with first steps and fresh beginnings.

Ask God for Guidance

If you’re unsure where to start, ask God. Pray for clarity and courage to take the first step, even if it’s small.

Ask God to reveal your purpose and give you the strength to take the necessary steps. Pray for wisdom to know when to plan and when to act.

With God by your side, you can’t go wrong. Trust that He will walk with you every step of the way.

Psalm 37:23 reassures us, “The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him.”

So, take that first step today. Your future depends on it.

Living a God-Inspired Life,

Chris
