Why Church Still Matters: A Story of Healing, Growth, and Finding Home

It’s crazy how small decisions can lead to life-changing moments. As I look back, I see how even seemingly insignificant choices create a chain reaction that shapes our lives. In 2010, God used something as simple as food to lead my wife Sandy and me back to church—a journey that would change everything for us.

A Cookout That Opened the Door

At the time, Sandy and I weren’t attending church. Life was busy, and honestly, my heart wasn’t in it. But then Sandy found an event: a church hosting Wednesday night community cookouts. She wasn’t sure if I’d be interested, but she didn’t know God had already been preparing my heart.

When she told me about the event, I surprised her by saying, “Why not? Let’s go. We can get fed both ways.” Little did I know how true that would be.

We attended three cookouts in a row, enjoying the atmosphere and the people. On the third week, we decided to try their Sunday service. As we walked in, I immediately felt uneasy. Something about the traditions didn’t resonate with me. During the service, I found myself silently arguing with God: “You led me here, but this isn’t the place for us.”

God’s answer wasn’t what I expected. I felt Him say, “I needed to open your heart first. Now, I’m leading you somewhere else.”

That nudge pointed us toward Savannah Christian Church (now Compassion Christian Church), a place we hadn’t even considered before. The following Sunday, we attended, and it felt like home from the moment the worship music started. Sandy and I both knew this was where God wanted us. Over time, we became active members and even leaders.

Understanding the Journey: Church Hurt and Healing

I share this story not to gloss over the fact that finding a church can be hard, especially if you’ve experienced church hurt. Sandy knows this pain all too well—she left the church at 14 because of a hurtful experience. For years, she avoided church, thinking it would always feel the same. But God brought us together to find healing, and eventually, a spiritual home.

Church hurt is real, and it’s valid. But not all churches are the same. Think about it this way: if you had a bad experience at a restaurant or a store, would you stop dining out or shopping altogether? Probably not. Instead, you’d find another place that aligns better with your needs and values. The same applies to finding a church.

It’s important to remember that not all churches are alike. There are communities out there that are healthy, healing, and full of grace, waiting to walk with you through your spiritual journey. And while no church is perfect, it’s about finding a place where you can grow and heal.

Why Church Still Matters

Here’s why church is important, even in the face of challenges:

A Place to Heal and Grow

Church isn’t just a building; it’s a community of people seeking to grow closer to God. When you find the right one, it can be a place of healing, encouragement, and transformation. It can provide the nurturing environment you need to grow spiritually, emotionally, and mentally.

Accountability and Support

Life is hard, and having a group of people who pray for you, encourage you, and hold you accountable is invaluable. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” The church becomes a safe space where you can be encouraged, held accountable, and uplifted, no matter what life throws your way.

Purpose and Calling

Church gives you opportunities to serve, grow your gifts, and fulfill your purpose. Ephesians 4:11-12 reminds us that the church exists to equip people for works of service, building up the body of Christ. Being part of a church allows you to find and walk in your God-given purpose.

Obedience to God’s Word

Hebrews 10:25 tells us not to give up meeting together but to encourage one another. Attending church isn’t just a good idea—it’s God’s design for our growth and connection. It’s not about attending a building, but about being a part of a living, breathing community that strengthens you.

The Benefits Beyond Spirituality

Research shows that attending church has significant mental and emotional benefits as well. According to a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, people who regularly attend church tend to experience lower levels of stress, depression, and anxiety. In fact, a survey conducted by the National Institute of Health found that individuals who attend religious services regularly report higher levels of happiness, life satisfaction, and a sense of purpose. The sense of belonging that comes from being a part of a church community offers not just spiritual support, but emotional and mental stability too.

Practical Steps for Finding the Right Church

If you’ve been away from church or had a bad experience, here are some steps to help you find a place where you can thrive:

  1. Start with Prayer: Ask God to guide you to the right church. Be open to where He might lead you—even if it’s somewhere unexpected.
  2. Research and Explore: Look up churches in your area. Watch online sermons or visit websites to get a feel for their values and teaching style.
  3. Visit with an Open Mind: No church is perfect, but some are healthier fits than others. Attend with a spirit of curiosity and grace.
  4. Focus on Community: A great church isn’t just about the sermon; it’s about the people. Find one where you feel welcomed and supported. A healthy church community can help you heal and grow.

The Power of Small Steps

Looking back, I’m amazed at how God orchestrated everything, starting with a simple cookout. He used food to open my heart, prepared Sandy to trust again, and brought us to a church where we could grow together.

If you’re hesitant about returning to church, I encourage you to take a small step. Visit a service. Join a group. See what God might do with that single act of faith.

Remember, church isn’t about finding a perfect place; it’s about connecting with a perfect God who loves you and wants to see you thrive.

Call to Action

If you’ve been away from church, what’s stopping you from giving it another chance? God can use the smallest steps to lead to the biggest blessings. Don’t let fear, past hurt, or uncertainty hold you back. Take a step of faith—you might just find home.
